Cheeseburger In Paradise: Is Your Meat Safe To Eat? 🍔
When a problem comes along, you must flip it

IT’S A HEARTACHE
Since this disturbing little nugget was news to me, a PSA for you: Women are 50 percent more likely than men to be misdiagnosed following a heart attack. Heart attack symptoms for men present as classic chest pain and left arm numbness, whereas for a woman, a heart attack is more likely to manifest similarly to heartburn, with nausea and indigestion. Couple that with how frequently women minimize our symptoms and ignore problems in order to keep calm and carry on- it’s literally a total eclipse of the heart. To my ladies: pay attention, speak up, love u. ❤️♀
WTFODMAPs?
Gut health is soooo trendy these days, even tho we’ve had guts for like, millions of years…better late than never, no? We’ve gotten smarter on IBS, gluten intolerance and the importance of fiber, for example, but less discussed is an entire group of whole and healthy foods that can trigger reactions in some tummies. They’re classified under the clumsy acronym FODMAPs (the branding department was maybe off that week?), based on the types of starches in each category. Geek out on the details here; examples include onions, garlic, mushrooms and cauliflower for a start—and then there’s apples, mangoes, bananas and watermelon! I know, I can ruin anything for you! But before you unsubscribe, know that most folks are sensitive to ONE category of the six, and sometimes just a few foods within that category. 🙋🏻♀️🥦 If you’ve had symptoms like bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea that are otherwise unexplained, it may be worth experimenting by eliminating certain foods to see if you can find a culprit. You might even thank me for it. But please don’t send cauliflowers.

HERE’S A TIP, MAKE THE CHANGE
Speaking of summer fun, I’m sure you already knew that Wednesday was National Hot Dog Day, what with such a slow week for news. 👀 (Fun/gross: from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs, or 818 hot dogs every second during that period) For those not lucky enough to observe it in real time, this weekend will likely be your chance to fire things up. But the more you grill, the more you might want to chew on this.
Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are chemicals that form when muscle meat (beef, pork, chicken and seafood) meets high temperatures, such as cooking on high heat or grilling over an open flame, and in some studies have been linked to cancer. The less char, the more you cut down on HCAs. Most suggestions for reducing the char will have chefs and grillmasters’ aprons in a bunch (microwaving your meat? Mais, non.) but you can probably handle flipping your meat more frequently. It’s just a patty- put your thing down, flip it and reverse it. And we prolly don’t need to worry about hot dogs, since there’s no actual meat in them anyway, amiright?
