WELL ON HEELS
Soooo, there were just a few other stories keeping our attention last week, but it should not be overlooked that the world of mental health (and the Well on Heels hall of fame) lost one of our finest and tiniest warriors. Emphasis on heels! Dr. Ruth gave a lot of people a lot of advice in her decades-long career as a therapist, most of it related to sex, much of it rooted in heart-warming common sense, like this parable about turtles: “In order for the turtle to move, it has to stick its neck out. There are going to be times in your life when you’re going to have to stick your neck out. There will be challenges. And instead of hiding in a shell, you have to go out and meet them.” 🐢 RIP. Turtle Power.
GOOD THINKING
A buzzy wellness term you may be hearing lately is Nootropics, a category of brain-boosting compounds that folks are using for increased focus and productivity. If you use coffee to get your brain firing, you’re already a Nootrooper (not a real word). Caffeine is one of the most commonly known nootropics, but the list goes on and it’s not just about getting a jolt of energy. I mentioned a few issues ago that I’d be starting my trial month with Thesis and reporting back, so here we are. I sampled a customized variety pack of formulae for Clarity, Logic, Creativity, and Motivation, rotating through each for one week. I LOVE that they offer cognitive support products with a caffeine-free option, often hard to find and a must for those delicate flowers like myself. The flip side is that without the jolt that you might get from a stimulating formula, it may be harder to see a noticeable difference in real time. But I’ll say this: without forcing it or making a deliberate effort, this past month has been one of my most productive and most successful in terms of tackling projects, going after (and achieving) goals and just getting sh*t done.

PLASTIC OH-NO BAND
Jogging your memory here–how’d you do with a week without plastic? Nowhere near as easy as it sounds, check out this reporter’s summary of her Plastic-Free July experiment. Americans go through about five pounds of plastic a week, and if you’ve been following along, you’ve noticed that plastic is showing up in some shocking and downright disturbing places in our bodies. EW. Now you can actually order a test (that’s $10 off, you’re welcome) to see how much plastic is in your system. And for more ways to get the plastic out of your kitchen, check out these PFA-free nonstick pans.
HERE’S A TIP, MAKE THE CHANGE
A real easy way to mitigate some exposure to forever plastics is often right in your hands. While you’re sipping on a hot cup of nootropics, see that lid on your takeout coffee cup? Ditch it immediately. And while you’re at it, that paper cup is not much better. This simple daily staple habit wreaks just as much havoc the environment as it does on our health. Yes, you’ve heard some of this before, but this concerning issue is going away. Microplastics are everywhere, and considering how little control we have over their spread, my hope is to give you the option to just say no to that cup of joe-to-go, or at the very least, remove the lid. For more on this, check out my chat with Dr. Zandra Palma and her TED talk that was (spoiler alert:) BANNED by TED!
When it comes to nanoplastics, it’s something you just can’t trust, something mysterious. Trusted brands, special deals and summer fun ahead for paid subscribers only.
