Midnight Special: Bedtime Snacks for Better Zzzs đ„Ș
Shining some everloving light and goodies on you

BIG LOVE
On this, the eve of cuffing season, hereâs an argument for keeping your solo act intact: studies have found that cohabitating with a partner is linked to an increase in BMI and a decline in healthy lifestyle in both men and women, compared to when they were not in the relationship. The research specifies that men and women gain weight significantly after four years in a relationship. Iâd be curious to know if that timer also happens to correlate with eating our election feelings every four yearsâŠ
NIGHT SHIFT
Between the Northern Lights on a surprise US tour, the days getting shorter, and the endless doom cycle of news, consistent sleep is getting harder for many of us. So here are more goodies for you! Last week I sang the praises of a rad new clock thatâs giving better mornings, and now you need to know about my new favorite tool for PM wind-down:
Helight: Perhaps youâve read my sermons about using red light before bed and thought, âOK cute but how do I do this without redesigning my entire home lighting scheme?â Helight is your new best friend. This palm-sized powerhouse emits an ideally calibrated 630nm of red light into the room for 14 minutes before slowly dimming itself off; just enough time for you to finish your bedtime routine and wind down into darkness. Super lightweight and portable-I use it while brushing teeth and then take it from bathroom to bedside. I also take in my carry-on luggage to wherever Iâm going, âcuz it works that well. đšđŽ
HEREâS A TIP, MAKE THE CHANGE
If you get peckish before bedtime, you can use that snack attack to your advantage for a better nightâs rest. If youâre not practicing intermittent fasting i.e. abstaining from all food after 6pm or so, there are certain food combinations that yield sleep benefits (in moderation (duh), and ideally no less than an hour before tuck-in):
Cherries and dairy are both a natural source of melatonin, helping you get sleepy (hence the old warm milk trick (gags while typing))
Almonds are a natural source of magnesium, which helps to relax muscles
The ultimate Midnight Special: complex carbohydrates like whole grains can help keep blood sugar stable throughout sleep, and combined with protein and a little fat, which slow the release of those sugars and help you feel sleepy by increasing tryptophan in your brain, itâs the ideal bedtime snack: i.e. a cheese stick or a spoonful of almond butter with a couple of whole grain crackers. Gânight!
